Don’t forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast health is critical to your overall wellness as a woman

Because breast health is such an important topic, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, HealthStar Physicians Premier Medical wants to remind you that it’s also a good time to schedule your annual doctor’s visit and mammogram.

Why do mammograms matter?

Mammograms are X-ray pictures of the breast and areas around the breast. They are the best method to detect early signs of breast cancer and an important part of your breast health routine. Mammograms have the ability to find breast cancer early before external symptoms of breast cancer (such as dimpling or lumps) can be felt.  In fact, mammograms can detect problems up to three years before there are physical signs of breast cancer.

Yearly mammograms are also important because they show a history of your unique breast health and give doctors a record for comparison should there be a concern.  Women 40 and older are encouraged to have physical exams and mammograms annually.

What can I do to stay healthy?

While a number of factors that determine breast health, like family history or age, can’t be changed, you can lower your risk of breast cancer by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  According to the CDC, activities to lower the risk include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Enjoying a regular exercise routine
  • Weighing the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives
  • Breastfeeding
  • Knowing your family medical history

Partnering with your medical provider

If you have concerns or questions about your breast health or other healthcare routines, make an appointment with your doctor or medical provider to discuss matters like your family history of breast cancer, how birth control or hormone replacement therapy may affect your breast cancer risk, or weight management and other issues. A medical visit with your provider can provide answers to your questions and invaluable peace of mind.

If you are looking for physicians in Newport, Tennessee, HealthStar Physicians Premier Medical welcomes the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your concerns. We believe that having a doctor close to home and developing open communication is a great place to start on your journey to overall breast health.
